United Nations Recovery and Peacebuilding Programme (UN RPP) and Garage48 are inviting you to Hack for Locals - a hackathon on building smarter, stronger, safer, cohesive and smoother-running communities.

Hack for Locals is going to take place on the 9th to 11th of October in Kharkiv, Ukraine at one of the coolest venues in Ukraine – @ Fabrika Space.

The overall goals of the Hack for Locals are :

✔︎ to bring together all the community enthusiasts and bright minds, who would like to participate more actively in the local government's decision-making process in Ukraine
✔︎ to brainstorm and find new and creative ICT solutions that would support the local democracy
✔︎ to create more viable e-participation services geared towards social progress
✔︎ to find solutions and gain different insight into the complex problems NGO’s in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts are currently dealing with
✔︎ to help communities overcome the digital divide

Being creative, expressing yourself, striving for excellence and never giving up are the key factors to initiate a change in the community and we all have these powers, but we can’t really trigger them alone. Coming together and sharing your ideas and thoughts with everyone will give you a better understanding and create clear goals and objectives.

This event is a possibility to surround yourself with people who empower you to become better, so prepare yourself for 48-hours of excitement, inspiration, creativity, and validation. Teams are formed on spot around the best ideas (so please, do not worry if you don't have an idea at all - you are more than welcome to the hackathon!). 48-hours that follow, will be filled with vibrant community energy, brainstorming, and hard work, all in order to turn the initial idea into a working prototype. All the teams will be supported by top-notch local and international mentors. All the finished prototypes will be presented on the 11th of October finale and the best teams will receive rewarding prizes that will enable them to develop their ideas even further! Best teams will get access to follow-up mentoring and online pre-accelerators as well as opportunities to work with several businesses and governmental institutions.

Coffee, warm meals and snacks are provided throughout the event, so you can focus on developing your idea into a full-on prototype.

Just to be clear, this hackathon is meant for everyone - we do not discriminate by age, gender or the ideas, as long as they all carry that spark of hope for a better tomorrow.

To help to make it even more inclusive- the cost of the travel and accommodation for the participants to whom it is difficult to travel due to a physical disability will be covered by the organizers.  As a regular participant- we will cover all your travel related costs from all over Ukraine.

Synergy & diversity are vital for innovation and growth of the community!

Inspiring minds, designers, developers, community-builders and enthusiasts, business people and marketing folks, NGO and governmental institution representatives who face these problems on a daily basis .

    🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

Програма ООН із відновлення та розбудови миру (UN RPP) та Garage48 запрошують на Hack for Locals: Хакатон для розвитку місцевих громад, задля розробки рішень актуальних соціальних проблем в Україні.

Hack for Locals відбудеться 9-11 жовтня у м. Харків, на одній із найкрутіших українських локацій - Fabrika Space.

    Загальні цілі Hack for Locals:

Positive attitude, open-mind and lots of energy together with everything you need for a rapid product development. Please take your:

    • laptop
    • 3-5m power extension cord (as power might be on distance)
    • mobile phone
    • all chargers

    Optional:
    • photo camera to take and share photos
    •  sleeping bag, blankets, pillows if you plan to sleep at the venue
    • credit cards for domain registration
    • business cards (if you have any)

    PITCHING IDEAS

Ideas are presented based on "elevator-pitch" method within 90 seconds. Event host and the audience can ask 1 to 3 short questions. You can prepare 1 (one) PDF slide to support your pitch. You should send the slide by Friday noon 12:00 PM

(April 12th), to mari@garage48.org (Subject: name of your project).

    Consider following key points:

    • Briefly, describe your idea background (10 sec)
    • What is the name of the idea? (5 sec)
    • What's the idea all about? What is the problem your idea solves? Target user count and description (30 sec)
    • Technical solution and there is a revenue model (in case of non-profit idea, how the maintenance and further development costs will be covered) (30 sec)
    • Minimum viable product and plan for 48 hours. Who do you need in your team? (20 sec)

NB! Practice your pitch to your friends or family before you present! 90 seconds goes really fast!

    FORMING TEAMS

After pitching is over, we will put all the ideas on the wall. Every participant will choose their favourite idea and this is how teams will be formed. Usually, 14 to 20 best ideas will get enough interested people to get the "green light" for the implementation. The average team has about 5 to 7 people and the team should be "balanced" - covering all required roles like necessary engineers, designers, a project manager (team lead/visionary/field expert) and marketer in order to get the product/service ready in 48 hours! The minimum size for a team is 4 people and max is 8 people. If some ideas get too few people or are not balanced (probably unable to build the service), the idea will be dumped. Those people should choose another idea/team.

    WORKING IN TEAMS

After forming the teams, organisers will give a room/space for every team for the weekend. You should start by dividing roles, setting the product vision, customer journey and start working right away. It is very important that you have a project manager (team lead/field expert) on the team - one of his tasks is to keep the focus of the team, one eye on the clock and the other on the team progress. 48 hours is really short time.

    FOOD & DRINKS

We provide full catering at the venue. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on Thursday and Friday. There is also snacks/drinks/coffee available, so you can fully focus on your work.

    MENTORS

We have arranged great mentors to work with the teams throughout the weekend. Some of them have great fieldwork experience, others are more technical. Be open and ask for their advice and contacts. They are there to help you!

Please wear your name badge during the whole event, this will help to encourage networking. Otherwise, be open, get to know new people, share your ideas and give ideas/feedback to other teams.

    MOST IMPORTANT - have fun!

    FRIDAY DEMO PRESENTATIONS:

    • Friday afternoon at 14:00 pm is the deadline. Either you have your service ready or not, time will tell.
    • Each team will practice their demo together with mentors and jury members for 10 minutes to make the final adjustments and make a better presentation.
    • We do not allow any Powerpoint presentations for web services - we want a live demo of your product!
    • The final demo event starts at 5:30 PM
    • We will pick teams randomly. Every team gets 3 minutes for product demonstration (+1 minute for questions).
    • We admit, that the development process is the ultimate importance. But we still have a jury, to evaluate the results and choose the top projects.

    SLEEPING POSSIBILITIES AT THE VENUE

Take your sleeping bag and/or blanket, pillow and you'll have a possibility to stay overnight in the venue. We will provide foldable beds, please indicate at the registration if you need a sleeping spot.

If you have further questions, please see the Agenda tab above and FAQ below. If you don't find an answer there, then please write us at mari@garage48.org

    FAQ:

    1. What is Hack For Locals?

It is an intensive hackathon where people pitch ideas, form teams and build prototypes or sometimes full product/service over the 48 hours.

    2. Who can participate?

Registration is open to anyone:  teams and individuals.  Inspiring minds, designers, developers, community-builders and enthusiasts, business people and marketing folks, NGO and governmental institution representatives who face these problems on a daily basis - REGISTER NOW, share your ideas with us and get ready for the event of your life!

    http://bit.ly/hack4locals

If you register for the hackathon event, then we expect you to be ready to work on the project also after the hackathon is over.

PS. If you come as a team, each team member still has to register individually.

    3. I don't have my own team? Can I come?

Sure, Garage48 is about networking, meeting new people, hacking, building new products/services and finding new friends. After pitching ideas on Friday evening, all participants will choose their favorite idea and form a team on-site. You should carefully review all pitched ideas, talk to the team members, negotiate, brainstorm and finally find the best matching project for yourself. Then join this team and start working on the project.

    4. How to submit and pitch an idea?

We ask all participants to submit their ideas already when registering but also share your idea to our Facebook event

before the event. This allows other participants to review their idea, ask questions and possibly to develop the idea further. In the hackathon event, there will be about 30-35 slots for ideas.

    5. How long is the pitch?

On Friday night there are 90-second pitches for each idea, followed by 2-3 questions from audience/mentors. You can have one slide (PDF) to support your pitch.

    6. How are the ideas selected for the event?

Afterward, when ideas are pitched, each participant will choose the idea that s/he wants to work on. Ideas that are able to gather a sufficient team around them will prevail. People who have chosen the ideas that are not able to gather the proper team will have to join other teams.

    7. How big is an ideal team?

In our experience, the best teams have between 4 and 7 members. Each team should be self-sufficient by having all the main roles (business and product vision, design, programming, marketing, expertise in the subject of the hackathon) covered. The minimum size for a team is 4 people and max is 8 people.

    8. If I present an idea at the event, can someone steal it?

Of course :) Hackathon has many participants, including journalists, bloggers, and tweeters - your idea will not remain a secret. So, if you think you have a top-secret, patentable, Nobel-prize worthy idea, then don't present it in the hackathon ;). On the other hand, if you have an idea that has been sitting in your head for some time, waiting for the right time or right people to be put into practice, then this hackathon is a great place and environment for making it happen!

    9. Are 48 hours enough?

Yes, and No. 48 hours is more than enough time to take an idea, build a working prototype, alpha or beta service and make it publicly available for users, potential customers. (Unless you are building a nuclear reactor, new drug, a spaceship or something similar, of course). However, to make your prototype, alpha or beta into a viable business, much more work after the event is needed. We encourage (and give preference in selection) to those participants, who show an interest and willingness to continue working on (successful and promising) ideas after the event!

    10. Is it a startup competition to get funding?

Not really. The main idea of the event is to build a startup community, find new friends and meet people, build something cool in 48 hours. But it's not so much about winning the prize or getting financing. This hackathon is mostly an experience of building a new (working) project in 48 hours, meet and work with new people whom you probably would not meet otherwise.

    11. Can I buy a domain and set up hosting account before the event?

Yes, you can do various preparations for your project unless you start designing or coding. We encourage you to think of the project name, business model, short-term and long-term plan, etc. But it's not allowed to do any coding work on the project before the event.

    12. What happens to the developed products and services after the event?

The project built during hackathon events owned by the team who built it. So it's up to the teams to decide how do they take it forward. Some ideas are very likely to be developed into successful businesses, others struggle to find a feasible business model and fade away. Organizers are encouraging teams to continue developing the ideas and provide mentorship, but ultimately, the success or failure rests solely with the members of the team.

    13. Is the hackathon a continuous 48-hour marathon or can I sleep during the event, too?

Sleep is for the weak. (Just kidding). While some teams pulled all-nighters at the last events, most successful teams did take time to get a full 7-8 hour sleep, come back in the morning refreshed and were fully productive during the day. We provide floor space in the venue in case you don't want to go home or to your hotel.

    14. What if I have registered for the hackathon event as a participant but can not come to the event?

Please notify us by e-mail: (mari@garage48.org) as soon as possible about such changes. This way we can give your spot to someone else.

    15. What are the criteria for the jury to select a winning team?

The jury gives points between 1 to 10 and evaluates the following: people and team, business potential, product, presentation.

    1.  Artur Akopov, dalless2008@gmail.com
An app that would teach participants Chinese easy

    2. Nataliya Datchenko, ndatchenko@gmail.com

The idea of an app/ mechanism,  that could be implemented on a local level to communicate about the rights of the children with disabilities and children living in the families in hard living conditions. We would like to provide high-quality social services by different providers. The idea was also presented publicly on a  Hackaton in Lviv but did not win and did not receive the funding. We would like to develop it deeper during the  Kharkiv Hackathon.

    3. Rostyslav Litvinov, litvinov.rabota@gmail.com

My project envisages the development and implementation of the tool to access to public information on a local level. My idea is to develop a fully online public platform and collaboration environment that ensures open access to all local self-government bodies and agencies decisions in Ukraine. All of the functionality offered by the online platform will be available to the general public without the need to register and without any barriers to access.

    4. Artur Minakov, creator.artur@gmail.com
The idea is to use the Strava app (the most well-known social network for endurance athletes) to build eco-friendly and accessible urban environment. In Strava you can find tons of data, for instance, routes which cyclists and runners use, including their speed, number, effort, etc; we can use it for giving priority to a particular area when building or repairing sidewalks and bike-routes. This data can be used to make cities safer for everybody: from pedestrian to driver, by avoiding traffic congestion, speeding by different road users and creating an environment in which all participants in road and pedestrian traffic understand each other, as well as the rules of interaction.

    5. Mykyta Petukhov, mykyta.petukhov@gmail.com

Many international students who come to Kharkiv to study face some barriers in dealing with local students.  That is why they need a platform where they can improve themselves in the professional and personal fields. The main idea of the project is to create a public work for the English-speaking population of Kharkiv in order to provide them with opportunities to find partners, people with common interests, to unite and produce innovative ideas that will be implemented for the benefit of Kharkiv. The platform is supposed to be based on the principles of inclusivity, equality, and brotherhood.

    6. Юра Волошин, yurvoloshin@gmail.com
To build a  Touristik NGO in Kharkiv

    7. Rostyslav Litvinov, litvinov.rabota@gmail.com
The project envisages the development and implementation of the tool to access to public information on a local level. The idea is to develop a fully online public platform and collaboration environment that ensures open access to all local self-government bodies and agencies decisions in Ukraine. All of the functionality offered by the online platform will be available to the general public without the need to register and without any barriers to access.

    8. Sergina Tarnavska, serginatarnavska@gmail.com

To create a mobile application for communities, which will simplify communication with local authorities and combine all government services in one application.

    9. Ihor Shynkarenko, shunkarenkoigor@gmail.com
To develop a product that helps territorial districts search and attract investment tools and donors funds and etc.

    10. Zhuk Olexandr Evgenievich, olexandrzhuk.ukr@gmail.com
A grant aggregator. You can sea a model following this link:  https://www.behance.net/gallery/81792567/Shpera-Grants-search-system-CXUXUI?fbclid=IwAR2zDzXzmnlZHLv36955GozwRRJI-LTSt2GicAySWHwCO5-rpsPdrvAJH-Q

    11. Md Musa Howlader, mhshanto3@gmail.com
A software, that will trigger young people to form a volunteer group, target specific problems in the society and work together for them.

    12. Denis Коцарь, kozcar@gmail.com
The idea is meant to spread values and the importance of being eco-friendly. The main points are:
    • How to make money off recycling trash?
    • How can the government support it?
•What can you do right now?

    13. Mykola Nesterenko, findwayukr@gmail.com

The project is to collect all information about interesting places and sights in Ukraine on to one web site with all necessary information about it on few languages, and in future unite them into unique travel routes.

    14. Iryna Horbova, sms.service.post@gmail.com

The idea is to create a social project in the form of a free application for victims of domestic psychological, emotional, physical, as well as sexual abuse or violence in the family. The essence of the application is that by pressing the "Alarm button" the program will send an SMS notification with the coordinates of the location of the "victim" to relatives, trustees, volunteer organizations, etc. An automatic police call is made with the function of recording what's currently happening on spot (sound, video option) . The application should locate the nearest social assistance services, crisis, and rehabilitation centers for the temporary help for victims.

    15. Valeriia Didyk, diduk97@gmail.com
Interested to work in commands and to brainstorm about electronic portals for communities or making communication hubs for local communities. Valeriia is specialized in the work with different NGO's and has a vast experience of working with different governmental institutions, so she's well known in such spheres. At the moment she's involved in the NGO active in the culture, education and commercial sector.

    16. Андрухов Антон, andruhov.anton@gmail.com
    Social Watch Online Service
This is a service that allows residents of the city to find and buy goods/services at discounted prices at set hours, through a mobile app or website. This service will unite citizens, businesses and government institutions into a one single platform.
A citizen, having registered, will receive a special identifier/card by which it will be possible to purchase a product or service at a reduced price or free of charge, at the hours indicated by the system.
By registering, a business will be able to publish a product/service, indicating the address, as well as the price, social discount and its duration (social hours).
Local authorities can act as a customer at a business to conduct “social hours” on goods or services that are especially important for the population. The system will include a profile of user interests and geo-targeting, which will make it possible to quickly find on the map the places closest to the city dweller where social hours are held for the goods/services of interest, and also remind you what time can you get the products

    17. Anya Pozdnyakova , mira37cle@gmail.com

Anya and her team have been working on a board game that would ignite the inner social entrepreneur among kids.
They are looking forward to turning it digital over the course of a hackathon! The initial mockup of a digital version can be found here  https://drive.google.com/open?id=1lzMc8GstshJKroHGmNruTl3ZIxQ4r9Ju
    More info here:  http://ideas.eapcivilsociety.eu/businestep/

    18.Сергей Дараган , 1worldfood@gmail.com
The city of Kharkiv needs so many different initiatives there's very little community activism going on at the moment. For instance- minimal attention is paid to people with disabilities - they are locked up in their own homes and completely deprived of active participation in public events.

    19.  Людмила Нікітіна, nikitina.liuda1@gmail.com

The idea is to support the development of local youth- many students from vulnerable and disadvantaged groups come to Kharkiv from small towns and villages where it is not possible to receive high-quality higher education. The idea is to solve two primary problems - financial (to give an opportunity to live in the city for an optimum salary) and psychological-  to get an environment that will encourage and motivate youth development. We wanna create a free platform where both of these problems would be solved.

    20. Yuri Misnikov- yuri.misnikov@gmail.com. Yuri will also be a mentor at the event  and he can provide a lot of insight. If you want to solve some of these problems- feel free to reach out to him at the hackathon.

To create a number of electronic governance (e-governance) chatbots. It is proposed to look at the following rather problematic areas of hromada websites performance and raise its effectiveness of serving people. There can be many different approaches to chatbots. The ones below are just few examples.

    1)  A chatbot helping answer FAQ regarding the interaction between authorities and citizens ranging from the existing procedures and forms to the expected results of such interaction and how such results are communicated back to citizens.

    2) A chatbot helping answer FAQ regarding the specific procedure of sending request for public information and other types of appeals, complains, proposals.

    3) A chatbot helping answer FAQ regarding participatory budgeting.
