  • The European Space Week will be THE event for European Space in 2017 fostering interactions between the space and the digital community. For the second year in a row Garage48 will kick off the week-long event by organizing a hackathon , this year with amazing partners on board

    Garage48 SpaceTech: Integrated Applications hackathon


    The event is a one-of-a-kind gathering of engineers, developers, designers, scientists and experts eager to explore the possibilities of space technology and to brainstorm ideas on how to apply them here, on Earth. We are excited to present our amazing line-up of partners leading the ten hackathon streams:

    ESA (European Space Agency)

    Isn’t the European Space Agency a bunch of astronauts and rocket scientists? What does ESA have to do with hackathons and building services? A lot! From space, our planet’s atmosphere, land, and water can be monitored for multiple application fields. ESA is responsible for the satellites of the European Copernicus programme which is doing exactly that. And ESA is also very interested in making Earth Observation data more and more popular, also for those who have not yet discovered their usefulness for enriching apps and services. It’s a chance to make the resulting information accessible to a broad audience and create value in the process!  


    Technology available: ESA will provide an API that will contain access to Earth Observation data, in particular to those from the Copernicus programme. The geographical area to be used is the Baltic States and the surrounding waterways.


    GSA (European GNSS Agency)


    When was the last time you used a satellite? Likely, not more than 5 minutes ago. Positioning is a core asset of our lives and society as we know it. Yet, because space technology is somehow remote, we tend to forget what enables us to position ourselves, our means of transport or any other asset we may want to track: satellite navigations systems such as GPS, Galileo or Glonass.

    Galileo - the European Global Navigation Satellite System  - is now operational and is delivering live services to the Geo-IoT community.

    This year GSA is joining Garage48 SpaceTech, looking for pioneers and passionate coders who want to shape the future of Location-Based Services (LBS) and Geo-IoT, and discover how Galileo satellites can help transform ideas into reality!

    Join the hackathon, showcase your skills, connect with the Geo-IoT app-dev community, gain a competitive advantage for your future projects and win great prizes for you and your team.


    Technology available: Galileo enabled hardware with GNSS raw measurements to play with.


    ESTCube

    The evolution of small satellites has made space technology more accessible to the private sector and entrepreneurs. Advances in the miniaturization of electronic components and breakthroughs in space technology have enabled small satellites (10x10x10cm and multiples of) to perform a wide variety of operations with ever increasing efficiency and ease. Small satellite missions range from, but are not limited to: earth observation, telecommunications, demonstrating new spacecraft technologies and even asteroid mining.

    ESTCube is the team behind the first Estonian satellite launched to space in 2013. At the hackathon, they would be responsible for helping you integrate the hardware components into your ideas. The technical mentors will be helping out with all IoT solutions, extra points if you choose to integrate with other satellite data streams.


    Technology available: ESTCube will be responsible for all the hardware equipment at the event. 

    There are 3 different Laboratories you can use in Physicum. 1) with white board and computers, 2) for electronics and 3) for mechanics.

    Laboratories are equipped with basic lab tools.

    Electronics lab includes soldering tools, multimeter, power supply, oscilloscope and signal generator.In electronics lab we shall also have Rasbperry evaluation boards for programming.The mechanics lab include drill press, one lathe and CNC for wood and plastic.

    We will also have the option for on demand 3D printing with supervision. So, please let us know if your idea requires the need for 3D printing!

    All other necessary materials will be ordered before the event as needed by your needs! So, please let us know as soon as possible your idea and what would you need.

    Criteria:


    Innovation, creativity

    Is the application integrating different elements from different hackathon streams to create an original application/product? Is the application making use of space technology and data?


    Progress and potential of the team

    Has the project advanced significantly during the 48 hours? How well did the team work together? Is the team ready to take on the challenge?


    Product and business potential

    Is the demonstrated part polished, visually appealing, easy and enjoyable to use? Is there a potential market demand/customer base?


    Presentation

    Is the solution completed or could be feasibly completed? Does the final presentation make clear of what has been built and what is the future vision?

    The webinar will include: short intro to Garage48 & detailed description of the technology ESA and GSA are bringing to the hack. They will also announce their special prizes!

    We'll start on Friday at 17:30 with opening doors. Please come on time, as the registration process might take some time. This time before the official opening is a great opportunity for getting to know the crowd and to network. See the agenda for further information.

    REGISTRATION
    Please register choosing the one role you feel most comfortable with. If you register with an idea you will gather a team on the spot or if you register without one, it is okay too, you will just join someone else’s team after pitching.

    WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU?

    Positive attitude, open mind and lots of energy! Everything you need for a rapid product development. We will have equipment and materials on site, let us know in the registration form what you need.

    PITCHING IDEAS

    Ideas are presented based on "elevator-pitch" method within 90 seconds on Friday night. Event host and audience can ask 1 to 3 short questions.


    You can prepare 1 (one) PDF slide to support your pitch. You should send the slide by Friday noon, at the e-mail space@garage48.org (Subject: name of your project).


    Consider following key points:

    • Describe briefly your background (10 sec)

    • What is the name of the idea (5 sec)

    • What's the idea all about? What is the problem your idea solves? Target user count and description (30 sec)

    • Technical solution and if there is a revenue model (in case of non-profit idea, how the maintenance and further development costs will be covered?) (30 sec)

    • Minimum viable product and plan for 48 hours. Who do you need for the team? (20 sec)


    NB! Practice your pitch to your friends or family before you present! 90 seconds goes really fast!


    FORMING TEAMS

    After pitching is over, we will put all the ideas on the wall. Every participant will choose their favourite idea and this is how teams will be formed. Usually ca 15 ideas will get enough interested people to get the "green light" for the implementation.

    Average team has about 5 to 7 people and the team should be "balanced" - covering all required roles necessary like engineers, designer, a project manager (team lead/visionary) and marketer in order to get the product/service ready in 48 hours!

    If some ideas get too few people or not balanced teams (probably unable to build the service), the idea will be dumped. Those people should choose another idea/team.


    WORKING IN TEAMS

    After forming the teams, organizers will give a room/space for every team for the weekend. You should start by dividing roles, setting the product vision, customer journey and start working right away.

    It is very important that you have a project manager (team lead) in the team - one of his tasks is to keep the focus of the team, one eye on the clock and the other on the team progress. 48 hours is really a short time.


    Food and drinks. We provide breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday. So, you could focus on work and building your product.


    Mentors. We have arranged mentors to work with the teams throughout the weekend. Some of them are more technical, some more business savvy. Be open and ask for their advice and contacts.


    Please wear your name badge during the whole event, this will help to encourage networking and gets you inside through security guards.


    VENUE

    The venue is opened 24/7. We will have separate sleeping areas, so please bring your mattress + sleeping bag if you'd like to stay there. There are showers and also a sauna on Saturday night. Catering and snacks/drinks/refreshments will be provided throughout the event.
