‼️ IMPORTANT UPDATE! THE REGISTRATIONS IS OPEN UNTIL 4-th OF JUNE, 11:59PM KABUL TIME ‼️
‼️ YOU WILL RECEIVE AN UPDATE WHETHER YOU'RE IN OR OUT ON THE MORNING OF THE 5TH OF JUNE ‼️
Garage48 and Startupistan together with the support of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Development Cooperation, have gotten together to search for ideas that will help Afghanistan during & after the COVID- 19 crisis!
Afghanistan has lived through decades of war and is bracing another deadly challenge, threatening the lives of millions. In a country, where community relations are strong, the authorities are struggling with forcing people to self-isolate. Also, not many can afford to stay at home for weeks, people need to keep on working, in order to provide the necessary food items for their families. The fragile healthcare system is even under bigger pressure than it was before the pandemic, struggling with the shortage of masks, hand-sanitizers, and ventilators. Online home-schooling is not really a solution in a country, where mobile data is a luxury to have, not to even mention computers or laptops.
🇦🇫From 9- 12th of June, we will host an online hackathon dedicated specifically to the challenges that Afghanistan is facing in the COVID-19 crisis🇦🇫
It is prime time to design, test, and launch innovative ideas that will either tackle the crisis or position Afghanistan in a softer place in the aftermath of the crisis!
The intent of this hackathon is to develop ideas that:
❗️ are prototype-able in 48-hours and which will help deal with COVID-19 and its aftermath
❗️to find solutions to problems, specific to Afghanistan
Do not stop at anything. Think of the crazy approaches. Think of stuff that needs different approaches. Think of the problems that the COVID-19 crisis presents to you daily! Think for a few days, jot down your best idea, get together a team, and join us for the hackathon.
❓How does it work❓
👉Think of an idea, that you would like to solve at the hackathon, put together a team or apply solo
👉The minimum number of participants in the team is one. The maximum number of team members is ten. While we let you sign up with your idea as an individual participant, once your idea gets chosen, you have to put together a team before being able to compete at the hackathon.
👉Rules for the team submission
Each team should ideally consist of:
idea owner who will take the role of the team lead (coordinating, project management)
an engineer or a field expert ( if an idea execution requires it, optional)
REGISTRATION IS CLOSED!
👉 We will look carefully through each application and will choose the top ideas that will enter the competition.
All the teams that enter the competition, will be announced on the 1st of June! You will receive an e-mail with complete instructions on how the hackathon will look like, but get ready for the craziest 48-hour online hack you’ve ever experienced! Please remember, if you applied individually, and your idea got accepted, you have to submit your team by the 4th of June.
👉 All the selected participants of the hackathon will receive a free mobile data package upgrade from us, prior to the hackathon in order for you to freely hack away!

FAQ Hack the Crisis Afghanistan
I am new to a hackathon. How does it work?
Garage48 hackathon is a bulletproof 48-hour format, where ideas get built into prototypes with teamwork and mentoring support. The organizing team guides you through all the steps of the hackathon from idea submission to mentoring and final presentations to the jury for selecting winners.
100 best ideas that enter the competition are selected on the 1st of June. Garage48 team will send a letter to all the chosen teams with complete instructions on how the hackathon process will look like. We will let everyone who didn’t make it know as well :)
Follow the event information and agenda for idea submission:
What kind of ideas are expected?
We’re welcoming all ideas aimed at solving the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis and its socio-economic aftermath. We are hoping to see lots of good ideas from healthcare, business, community, education, and to ideas that help vulnerable populations.
The intent of this hackathon is to develop ideas that:
- are prototypeable in 48-hours
- help to soften the COVID-19 related problems specific to Afghanistan
Can I join if I’m not a developer, UX/UI designer or an engineer?
YES! Only with visionaries and idea owners and experts from all the various fields this crisis is affecting, can we truly fight the pandemic. Whether you come from healthcare, education, social services or any other field - we need your ideas and your expertise!
I wanna join, but I don’t have a wifi connection or access to the mobile internet package!
All the selected participants of the hackathon will receive a free mobile data package upgrade from us, prior to the hackathon in order for you to freely hack away!
Where can I submit my idea?
REGISTRATION IS CLOSED!
Can I submit several ideas?
We strongly suggest you to choose one idea and prepare your idea submission and team as thoroughly as possible - do research, talk to people, involve additional experts to your team and make a plan for what you’re gonna build in the 48 hours.
What are the rules for team submission?
The minimum number of the participants in the team is 3. The maximum number of the team members is 10. While we let you sign up your idea as an individual participant, if your idea gets chosen, you have to put together a team before being able to compete at the hackathon.
The rules to submit the team are following:
Each team should consist of:
- idea owner who will take the role of the team lead (coordinating, project management)
- designer (UX/UI)
- an engineer, if an idea execution requires it (optional)
After you submit your team and your idea, the selected members of the jury and mentors
will go over each application one by one. We will choose maximum 100 top-notch ideas that will enter the competition.
What if I’m missing a needed team member (eg developer or designer) for my idea submission?
We can’t stop you from submitting your idea and team with as many team members as you have. Saying that - we strongly advise you to put your and your team’s network to work and find the missing skill-set and expertise. This will greatly improve the chances of your idea getting selected!
While we let you sign up your idea as an individual participant, if your idea gets chosen, you have to put together a team before being able to compete at the hackathon.
How does team formation happen if I’m applying as a solo participant and my idea gets chosen?
If you are a solo applicant at the time of the idea submission, start working on gathering a team with needed expertise to build your idea into a prototype. Put your own, your friends & family, colleagues networks to use to gather your team.
How can I update my idea submission?
We will evaluate your idea submission once. Put as much thought and effort into your idea submission as possible - do research, talk to people, involve additional experts to your team and make a plan for what you’re gonna build in the 48 hours.
What are the evaluation criteria for my idea?
- proposed problem matches with the topic is serious enough and if not solved, could have a wide impact
- description of the solution is clear and solves the problem well
- the team is formed and includes all required skills
If my idea doesn’t get chosen, will I be able to join a selected team?
We do some matchmaking with individual participants and different teams, that are looking for extra people and specific skills on Slack.
What kind of tools will I need to use at the hackathon?
The main communication channel of the hackathon will be Slack. All the selected teams are invited to join the #hackthecrisis Afghanistan Slack group couple of days prior the online hackathon begins. We recommend downloading the Slack app to both- to your smartphones and computers and allow the notifications. Slack will be the place for important hackathon workflow announcements, the place for communication with your team and a good way to connect with the mentors.
